TV preacher Joel Osteen and wife under fire for 'Hook 'em Horns' hand signal at son's University of Texas graduation - because some complained it was the devil's sign

  • Joel Osteen and wife Victoria were criticized for using the 'Hook 'em Horns' hand signal at their son's University of Texas graduation on Saturday
  • Hand gesture is used at University of Texas to represent its Longhorn mascot
  • Preachers posted photos on Twitter but it didn't bode well with some followers
  • They were accused of 'belonging to the devil' and using the 'devil's sign'

Famous TV preacher Joel Osteen and his wife Victoria have been accused of colluding with the devil after they posed for photos with their son as he graduated from the University of Texas.

The renowned televangelists documented their son Jonathan's graduation in Austin on Saturday by taking photos of themselves throwing a 'Hook 'em Horns' hand signal.

The spirited hand gesture has long been used at the university to represent its Texas Longhorn Bevo mascot.

But it clearly didn't bode well with some of their millions of Twitter followers who complained the megachurch family was using the devil's sign.

'We had a great day celebrating @JonathanOsteen's graduation from the University of Texas at Austin! So proud of him!' his father Joel tweeted alongside the photo.

Victoria tweeted similar praise: 'Congratulations @JonathanOsteen on your graduation from the University of Texas at Austin! I couldn't be more proud!'

While the majority of supporters praised Jonathan on his graduation, the tweets set more than a few of their followers off as well.

'The sign sir... I honor you but that hand gesture sent a very bad signal sir.!!!! Can't believe it's you,' one user wrote.

'What symbolic signs are u showing the world? Congratulations for belonging to the (devil emoji) or what? Pls Victoria kindly explain,' another said.

One user tweeted: 'Joel showing the sign of the devil is bad enough, you too Victoria.. unbelievable, what are you thinking??'

'Why on Earth would you use the devil sign? My goodness a thumbs up would work or you don't have thumbs??,' another said.

The Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston draws in well over 40,000 people each week for their services, which are also broadcast across the globe.

Joel took over his father's ministry after his death and has built it to the point where Lakewood bought and renovated an arena that once housed the NBA's Houston Rockets to hold its services.
